There are two main surgical procedures for lumbar disc herniation.
Microdiscectomy
This procedure removes parts of the disc to relieve pressure on the spine. Microdiscectomy is sometimes called microdecompression.
Laminectomy
Laminectomy removes part of the spinal bone, creating more space for the spinal cord and nerves, preventing them from compressing.
There are two further possibilities for a herniated disc in the cervical spine (neck)
Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) or Cervical Disc Replacement (CDR)
Both ACDF and CDR are surgeries in which the damaged disc is removed and a bone graft (ACDF) or artificial disc (CDR) is inserted to stabilize the area.
Microlaminoforaminotomy
In this surgery, the surgeon will remove a small piece of bone from the vertebrae to create more space for the compressed nerves.
